Yes, honestly they should have done a better job informing players better in the game about being able to augment with shards. Yep, you can do that. To elaborate on this, you can augment an item as many times as you want, but it always replaces the current augment. Just means you can't put the whisper into the socket, you can use it for augmenting without a problem. You don’t socket the whisper at all. Use the cube augment recipe with the whisper instead of a legendary gem (with the right color flawless royal gems). Wont affect the socket. Using a gem for augment =/= inserting in a socket.Generally people augment mainstat for more damage. Vitality is commonly used for supports, but people sometimes use str/dex for augment if you're int user to get more armor. And dex/str supports users may augment int to get all res.
