The problem is that if you order to charge they will use spears, I believe that the only way for them to use maces is if you send them on foot.I've been wanting to try like 10-20% shield infantry, 50-60% shock troops and 30% archers. Maybe shave like 10% off for cab or mounted archers to lead troops on a goose chase now and again, idk. I'm on console, so micro is annoying. Most fun I've had is like 80% shield infantry with 20% archers.Your job is to snipe enemy units as they charge the infantry, harass entrenched units, and pick off retreating units before they can re-form a line. Following an infantry line as close support works well, as does flanking an enemy line. If at all possible, try to occupy a position higher than your infantry, so you can shoot over their shoulders.
i could recommend better units in general but i don't think there is a magic pill for careless players. sturgian infantry is the strongest btw, probably the only troop tree which i wouldn't consider just a meatwall to cover rangeds. strugia's cav isn't the best though and their archers are relatively bad. #8.Fians are the best. Infantry should also be in shieldwall, basically always, unless you need the extra speed to close a gap prior to engagement or retreat. If they aren't atleast 2 troops deep, rearrange their formation to make it so, otherwise they won't stop any cav, period, MAYBE every now and again due to a spear wielding unit.
Honestly, aside from the few truly outstanding troops like Fian Champs, Khan's Guard etc., most factions have a roster that performs well enough to get the job done and trying to maintain an army of "best of the best" troops from all corners of the world often isn't worth the effort, or even feasible once you have fiefs to defend.

Aserai master archers are the second best after fians and you can get the noble tree for your 10% cavalry their infantry is meh I guess. Empire has good infantry but their archers don't have much ammunition (30 for palace and 20 for crossbow).
