First planter I bought after taking over the family farm was a 6x36" # 56 planter. It was a big step up from the IH #451 4x38" planter we had before. Mine was a disc opener planter though they were also available in a "runner" planter if I remember correctly. Far as seed spacing they did a fairly good job as long as everything was in good shape.
The drivetrain on those 56 planters is not strong enough to slide the wheels, especially if you're loaded with fertilizer. The plates certainly wouldn't be the problem. They're plastic. If they bound up, the planter would just shred them. It has the original seed boxes (I need to close off the seed windows though as they are not longer there) and the oversized fertilizer fiberglass fertilizer boxes as well.
