On top of what MC of WotR isn't making his own path to Lichdom, he's taking lessosn from another lich, who's definitely quite evil. The only cases I know of where a Lich can be good in D&D is the Baelnorn, which are created through the use of Elvish High Magic, and are exclusive to the Elven race.

It's meant for characters that have absurdly high Charisma, like a Sorc > Lich. You end up having like a +14-18 Charisma modifier, so Incorporeal Charm, Scaled Fist, and Nature's Whisper Oracle combined is like 45-50 AC all just from your Charisma.
