If the brake switch goes bad, the vehicle doesn't recognize when you're applying the brake and therefore the ignition won't be activated.

First thing to try is look at the battery terminals see if there is corrosion on the posts. If so, pull them off and clean them. If they look OK, try and turn the battery cables. If they move on the posts you need to tighten them down. If they are loose, it would cause all the symptoms you describe.
